The one litre three cylinder EcoBoost petrol engine that was recently introduced by Ford to the new Focus range has been named the 2012 International Engine of the Year. Its the second small engine award in a row with Fiats 875cc two cylinder engine being the winner of 2011.

The Ford EcoBoost was also named Best New Engine as well as winning the sub 1.0 litre category.
 
 
   
VW won the 1 to 1.4 litre category with its twin charged 1.4 litre engine. BMW won numerous awards in the following categories, 1.4 to 1.8 litre with its 1.6 litre turbo petrol, the 1.8 to 2.0 litre category with its 2.0 litre turbo engine, the 2.5 to 3.0 litre category with its 3.0 litre twin turbo and also the 4.0 litre V8 managed to take the 3.0 to 4.0 litre category.  Audi also scooped an award for its 2.5 litre turbocharged five-pot in the 2 to 2.5 litre category.

The Performance and over 4.0 litre award went to the 4.5 litre, 570bhp Ferrari V8.  

The Best Green Engine went to GM with their 1.4 litre range of petrol engines which are used in the Vauxhall Ampera and Chevrolet Volt.
